Fenton Gallery: Sean Scully - Graphic Works

Sean Scully at the Fenton Gallery
Sean Scully - Graphic Works

March 16th - April 9th 2005

This exhibition shows a selection of Sean Scully’s recent graphic works, focussing on aquatint and etching techniques.
The Munich Mirrors series is a set of 5 prints while the Etchings for Federico Garcia Lorca series comprises 10 prints. Also in the exhibition will be two individual pieces, Coyote and Winter Wall.

Sean Scully sees his prints as having an independent life. He says, “There are things you can do with prints that you simply can’t do with any other medium.” Recently some of his printmaking has influenced his paintings but in general he sees these two media as almost parallel activity. In interviews he has commented on the mystery of how the under layers of printed colour influence the pictorial surface in a way, which is very much in contrast with how we experience the physicality of his painting surfaces.

In his Etchings for Federico Garcia Lorca, 2003, images accompany poetry by the Spanish poet Lorca. Elements of literature have also featured in Scully’s work previously with an important painting and series of prints inspired by Joseph Conrad’s book Heart of Darkness. Far from being illustrations, Scully describes these connections with literature as more like an immersion of himself into the text or as a means of allowing the text to be his “companion” as he creates his work.

In the Munich Mirrors series (named after city where Scully now teaches) Scully can be seen to be exploring duality as a metaphor for the pathos of our efforts to create matches out of elements, which do not quite align. “‘Because that is the longing or the heartbreak. Things wont go together properly. There’s a fracture. And that is what fascinates me. These relationships and fractures are running through my paintings all the time. These awkward unions.’”

“…’And the first relationship is to ourselves in the mirror or ourselves with another. It’s an endless possibility and an endless problem.’… ‘abstraction can be considered close to philosophy, the juxtaposition of bodies and thoughts, whose open ended pairing and ordering and texture reveal deeper meaning.’”

Scully does not seek to achieve harmony in his work. As he says in the book “Sean Scully: prints; catalogue raisonne 1968-1999’,

“I always think about whether something has a resolution and an edge. In other words, an independence from me, something about that is a little wild. “
