November - Pat Harris & Rachel Parry
-
The Fenton Gallery is pleased to present ‘Remnants’ an exhibition by Pat Harris from November 5th – 27th .
Pat Harris’s paintings, exude a certain quiet beauty. There is an apparent simplicity in his work as a result of his choice of subject -a single object, but also due to the assuredness and freshness of his paintwork and the subtle colour changes he uses in such a suggestive way. His fruit may appear to stand still and alone, but are very much alive. The objects in his paintings “may all stand upright on the same ground, against the same wall, with the same light coming from the top right corner. But each of them has it’s own rate of vibration, leaves a different shadow on the wall, a different impression on the object’s surroundings. …Pat Harris does not paint a thing he paints the aura of the object, it’s pulse, it’s gleam, the precise place where it ceases to be itself and begins to become something else. ….They all share an origin in the purplish shadows at the bottom of the object, where gravity and light hold them in their allotted places. But they do not stay there, they strain at their edges, attempt to float away, and this is why the stems and stalks at the top almost disappear.” Geert Lernout, professor of comparative literature at the University of Antwerp.
Pat Harris was born in Dublin in 1953 and studied at the National College of Art and Design from 1973 to 1978. He was awarded a scholarship at the College and, subsequently, a number of Belgian Ministry of Education and Dutch Culture Scholarships which gave him the opportunity of studying at the National Higher Institute of Fine Arts, Antwerp, where he graduated in 1981. He has exhibited widely in Europe with solo shows at Taylor Galleries Dublin, De Zwarte Panter, Antwerp and Gallery S65 Aalst, Belgium, He lives in Belgium and teaches painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. His work is represented in many collections including: The Arts Council of Ireland, IMMA, Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, U.C.D,St. Patrick’s Hospital, Dublin and A.I.B.
Vaults - Rachel Parry – Installation Born in Cambridge, England, and Educated at Goldsmiths College, London, Rachel Parry has lived in Allihies, Beara, Co. Cork, since 1978. She has recently exhibited at the Rudolf Heltzel Gallery, Kilkenny in 2002 and Gallery Teraka, Boston in 2000, as well as being involved in group exhibitions at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar and the Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray in 2003. She will exhibit works which are as she explains “symbolic, sometimes mythic but also personal metaphoric images about women’s relationship both with themselves and others.” She says that the materials she uses are as relevant to the piece of work as the image.
