Gallery 1
'The Raw, Not The Cooked' - October 20th - 30th

This show, curated by Katherine Boucher Beug, will consist of works, many on paper, from a number of artists, including Maud Cotter, Angela Fewer, June Fitzgerald, Mags Fitzgibbon, Billy Foley, Ita Freeney, Vivienne Griffin, Jo Kelley, Susanne Leutenegger, Janet Mullarney, Collette Nolan, Eilis O’ Connell, Mick O’ Shea, June Pollock(Fairhead), Vivienne Roche and Charles Tyrrell.

“Every artist has work which does not ‘belong’, does not conform to the image they have of their work or what work should be shown. They have work which is oddly complete, but despite that, does not ‘belong’. It is work which the artist would not usually submit to an exhibition. It is work which surprises even the artist and may raise a smile.

It may be unfinished, but will remain unfinished because in its unfinished state, it has attained a perfection. It may have some spark of ‘genius’, of life which the artist is utterly unable to develop or explain. It may be in a medium the artist is less familiar with and thereby communicates something uncomfortable or unfamiliar.

Perhaps it is the absence of ego. Perhaps, if there were such a thing as an ego-meter, and if this ego-meter were held up to the images here, the readings would be very low. The fact that each artist had their own strong, clear and spontaneous idea of what they wanted to contribute, indicates to me that ‘raw’ is an important category.” Katherine Boucher Beug

This type of work has been an essential part of Katherine’s own practice, with sketchbooks and drawings being as fundamental to her practice as her works on canvas. An American by birth, Katherine Boucher Beug has lived in Cork for over 25 years. She studied art in America and Germany. Her recent solo exhibitions include Telemachus at the Fenton Gallery, Whose Equation at the West Cork Arts Centre and Thought before Song at the Crawford Gallery, the Project Arts Centre, Dublin and the Model Arts Centre, Sligo

Angie Shanahan - New Works. October 20th - 30th

In this group of paintings, I aim to present through a combination of the still life and figurative genre a formulation of my own narrative through our food culture. Not as we knew it 20 years ago, but now, in a vibrant multi-cultural Ireland with the influence of travel and television cookery programme's with reference to appetite, conviviality and potential consumption.
Presenting such exotic objects of nature as artichokes, Chinese pears and pomegranates in a close up view pushes the viewer to think about the cultural nuances of these, mostly imported foodstuffs. In some respects they become symbolic portraits of social status.

The still life assemblage “Skirts and kidneys” brings us back to a more traditional Cork food culture, presented slightly tongue in cheek and from a female perspective. While the surreal, “Frog spawn soup” hints at the continuous evolution of our food development. Will this dish appear in a restaurant near you soon? I think the frogs in my garden are safe for another while.

Angie Shanahan is a Cork artist and a graduate of the Crawford College of Art and Design. She has exhibited widely including solo exhibitions at the Lavit Gallery , Cork and the Kent Gallery Kinsale. and has been selected for exhibitions such as Iontas, An t-Oireachtas and the Royal Hibernian Academy. Her work is in the collection of The OPW, The Department of Defence and Ballymaloe Cookery School among others.
