Fenton Gallery: Katherine Boucher Beug, Janet Mullarney and Vivienne Griffin

Katherine Boucher Beug, Vivienne Griffin & Janet Mullarney
3rd - 26th February 2006

The Fenton Gallery’s first exhibition of 2006 presents an exhibition of new works on paper by Katherine Boucher Beug and new sculptural work by Janet Mullarney. Also showing will be a video installation piece by emerging artist Vivienne Griffin in our vault exhibition space.

Janet Mullarney, who was recently awarded the O’Malley art award, is one of Ireland’s most interesting sculptors, and is based between Ireland and Italy. In contrast Katherine Boucher Beug, is an American born artist who has been based near Kinsale, Co. Cork for the past thirty years. Both of these artists have exhibited previously at the Fenton Gallery.

Janet Mullarney’s sculptures are energetic dreamlike creations, which take their form in expressively carved and painted wood among other materials. The religious iconography and art historical references, which have influenced her over the years, remain in her present work. They are translated into ambiguous magical and benevolent creatures, and imagery drawn from an earthly and profoundly human sense of the sacred. Her continued use of the mask, or animal form, as a symbolic identity, is a core image in her work.

Katherine Boucher Beug’s last exhibition at the Fenton Gallery was the very successful Telemachus series of paintings in 2003. Her current works on paper represent a new departure and have their origins in the artist’s long-standing involvement in the theatre and in her fascination with the circus. In this series, Katherine has combined painting with the three dimensional inclusion of collaged figures and robes. Her use of the collage process is, by nature, playful, mischievous and destined to surprise even the artist. As Clement Greenberg once said to an artist, “If you want the work to change, change materials”. These new pieces create worlds of insinuated narrative, decisive moments, and questioning performances.
