John Doherty: 4th - 26th April

This exhibition will be John Doherty’s first solo show at the Fenton Gallery. It consists of a series of new paintings based on Marine objects - lighthouses, discarded boats and buoys. As is typical of Doherty’s work, each image is meticulously rendered. We are shown every detail in the objects he observes: cracks in the surface, layers of rust, every crude attempt to repair what is now discarded. In this obsessive attention to detail, Doherty gives these everyday objects a renewed sense of importance and perhaps a respect for their individuality, design, function and on occasion their impressive monumentality.

‘Doherty haunts harbours and scrap yards, collecting favourite craft, which speak to him visually…Working from a series of considered photographs, he explores the scene that originally impacted on him, painting layer upon layer in oil or acrylic, investigating beneath superficial surfaces the hidden nuances that underline each image.’ Hilary Pyle, 2008.

Born in Kilkenny in 1949, Doherty lived and studied in Dublin and now shares his time between West Cork and Australia. He has exhibited extensively throughout Ireland, Australia and the USA. His work is included in the public collections of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Institute of Modern Art, Chicago; AIB, Dublin and London; Artbank, Sydney; Irish National Stud; State Bank of New South Wales; Polygram Records, London; Waterford Municipal Gallery, as well as many private collections in Ireland, Australia, USA and Europe.
