Death in Dún Laoghaire
14th September – 10th October 2007
The striking and memorable photographs in Gary Coyle’s Death in Dún Laoghaire series combine many of the themes & subjects he has explored in the past such as the urban landscape, crime scene photographs and an interest in the every day and local. Coyle presents us with photographs of his hometown, relating to personal stories and memories of events - scenes of fog on the Vico Road, seafronts and Sandycove dart station, among others. Coyle’s aesthetic sense means that each scene is iconic and compelling.
This recent series had its origin in Coyle’s show Ad Marginem (which he showed at the Fenton Gallery in 2002) where he turned a local activity, swimming in the Forty Foot in Sandycove, into a work of art. These photographs taken while immersed in the sea certainly rank among the most mesmerizing imagery produced in the last decade of Irish art. Through working on the Ad Marginem series, he realized that the story behind the image added to peoples understanding of the work. The Death in Dún Laoghaire series is presented in some ways like a story which is both personal and communal.
Gary Coyle is a graduate of NCAD & the RCA London and works in a variety of media including drawing, photography and more recently performance. He has exhibited throughout Ireland and abroad. Recent solo exhibitions of his work have been held at the Project Arts Centre and Kevin Kavanagh Gallery in Dublin. In 2005 he was elected an associate member of the RHA. He has received various awards including this year’s RHA Portrait Award as well as their annual drawing prize in 1999, Artists Work Programme IMMA 1997-8 and a Henry Moore Foundation Fellowship in 1995. Coyle’s work is represented in many private and public collections, including IMMA, The RHA, The Crawford Municipal Art Gallery, Cork, The Office of Public Works, Dublin and The Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Mayo.
