The current exhibition features three young artists who all approach their work with an energetic painterliness.
Born in Wexford, Tonia Kehoe, was awarded Student of the Year upon graduating from Crawford College of Art and Design in 2004. She has been working exceptionally well ever since and her name will be familiar to those who watch contemporary art closely, as a significant young talent. A solo show at the Lavit Gallery followed her graduation, with another two person exhibition being held at the same gallery in 2006. An exhibition of her work, entitled ‘White Noise’, was held at Wexford Arts Centre in October 2006 to coincide with the Wexford Fringe Festival.
Ciarán Cronin’s fantastically vibrant yellow and orange abstract paintings are impressively dynamic, combining wide gestural strokes with beautiful colour. These new pieces mark a departure for Cronin, away from the monochrome works, which largely preoccupied his practice, into the area of colour. Born Dublin 1972, Cronin graduated from the National College of Art and Design in 1996. He moved to Cork in 1999 and has been a member of the Backwater Artists Studios since 2003. He was the winner of the drawing award at Iontas, the National Small Works art competition and exhibition in 2000. His work was also selected for the C2 exhibition at the Crawford Municipal Gallery in 2005.
Alan Boardman’s technique is strikingly individual. The pictures are at once opaque and reflective: the surface reflects the likeness of the viewer, while also opening a space that refers to the chemical, synthetic, micro and macro structures of the self. Born Cork 1980, Boardman graduated from Limerick School of Art and Design in 2004, and has been based in Limerick since. In 2005, he had his first solo exhibition at the Belltable Arts Centre Limerick and was also selected to exhibit in Open EV+A in the same year. An exhibition of his work was recently held at the Crow gallery, Dublin.
The Fenton Gallery is showcasing talent from the Cork area with its programme over the next three months. Two group exhibitions will take place, as well as the current exhibition of work by Alan Boardman, Ciarán Cronin and Tonia Kehoe there will be another in June featuring work by Colin Crotty, Megan Eustace and Sibyl Montague. Between these two shows is a one-person exhibition by Australian-Irish artist, John Kelly, who has been living in West Cork for the last five years.
