February 27th - March 19th
The work of Corban Walker will show at the Fenton Gallery, Cork from February 27th to March 19th.
Walker’s work is an ongoing pursuit in defining scale, location and identity from his particular vantage point. Ranging between sculpture, installation and photography, Corban Walker’s practice continues to explore the rich crossover between architecture and sculpture, revealing a common language of material, space and proportion.
In these photographic explorations of modern architecture, the grid-like, often reflective, facades seem a natural progression from his earlier sculptural work which was highly geometric and often utilised steel, mirror and glass. This exhibition will consist of new photography, drawings and two sculptural pieces.
Walker’s work leads us to question the ‘fundamental rules of measure and proportion that define architecture and the idealised body measure that is at its foundation.’ Whilst earlier installations and Polaroid compositions referenced his height (four foot – ‘Corban Scale’), these photographs tilt the normal perspective so that the viewer is unsure of where they are in relation to what they are seeing. “Walker transgresses the logic and rationality of Modernism, holding it up to a gentle mocking.” (Peter Murray, ‘The Irish Arts Review’.)
" People who see the work will not necessarily know my height, or my experience of scale, but the work is inscribed with the particular experience. The work demands the participation of the viewer."
Corban Walker is a Dublin based artist, who studied at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. His solo exhibitions include: the John David Moooney Foundation in Chicago; a one person exhibition at Pace Wildenstein Gallery in New York in September 2000; and several exhibitions in Dublin at the Green on Red Gallery . His most recent exhibition, ‘Location’ was shown at the London Print Studio in October 2003. He has completed several major commissions including work for the new extension at the Crawford Municipal Gallery of Art, Cork, The Mitsubishi Estate Co., Tokyo and this year at the new Limerick County Council Offices at Dooradoyle.
