This exhibition presents stills and photographs from Clare Langan’s new film – Metamorphosis. Langan, who has exhibited pieces from her film trilogy series at the Fenton in 2001 and 2003, continues to explore mankind’s fragile existence in the face of the limitless forces of nature. “Langan’s breathtaking seductive landscape open up the endless possibilities of reality. These are extraordinary works that explore the convergences of time as well as the crossover of reality and fiction, memory and history.” Rachel Thomas, Head of Exhibitions, IMMA.
In this series, Langan presents us with scenes of stormy chaotic landscapes and snow filled interiors. The imagery depicts a frozen glacial world in a perpetual state of transformation and motion, and ultimately chaos.
There has always been a crossover between photography film and painting within Langan’s practice. The use of hand-painted filters and lens attachments act as an obvious reference to painting. These new works are larger in scale than before and the almost exclusive use of intense blues adds an air of mystery and fantasy to the work.
Unlike Langan’s previous work, which has always been shot in existing environments and landscapes, Metamorphosis is shot in a mixture of created environments. There is not a clear line between reality and created environments.
One of Ireland’s most exciting mid-career artists, Clare Langan’s work has been shown worldwide. In 2007 Langan had solo exhibitions in London, Frankfurt, Tokyo and Barcelona. MOMA in New York showed her film trilogy in 2004 and she was selected to represent Ireland at the Bienal de Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2002 (in that same year her work was also shown at The Liverpool Biennial). Her work is in the collections of the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Dublin Institute of Technology, University College Dublin, University College Cork, as well as many other private collections.
